Route 66 Big Birthday Bash, take 2!

Hey hepsters!

10 + 7 = one hell of a big celebration!

On WEDNESDAY, JULY 6TH, we are having the rescheduled big celebration night at Route 66!  And, in a happy convergence, not only will we be celebrating 10 years of Jamie teaching in Dublin (reaching all the way back to Friday night classes at the YMCA on Aungier Street in 2001), but also July marks 7 years of Route 66 (going back to Wednesday nights at the Metropolitan Bar on the quays in July 2004)!!  HUZZAH!!!

The big party will be the same as previously announced: loads of cool dancing with loads of cool guest DJs, and the long-awaited debut of the Balboa/Blues room!  That’s right, get your groove on to some hot Balboa from 9 until 10:15(ish) and some even hotter Blues from 10:15(ish) until closing time!  Maybe we should call it the Hot Corner. 😉  And yes, we’ll be having Bal and Blues *every* week from then on!  HUZZAH!!!

So get yourselves down to the Turk’s Head on Wednesday, July 6th, and don’t forget to dress up in your best Swing duds to mark the occasion.  Be there or be square! 😉

(And that goes doubly so for anyone on the list who used to dance but, for one reason or another, got out of the habit.  Come on out for the night, even just to say Hi!  It would be great to see you again, and to thank you for helping to make this night so successful over the years!)

All the best,
Jamie and Clare

Route 66 Announcement!

Hello everyone,

Firstly, don’t forget, even though the big celebration isn’t going ahead tonight, Route 66 WILL still be on, down in the basement of the Turk’s Head.  We’ll be sure to mix in some Balboa-friendly and Blues-friendly tunes for those of you who were hoping to get your fix of those dances tonight.  Also, we WILL be watching Capital D up in a conference room of the hotel attached to the Turk’s Head.  Just go into the bar and they can direct you from there.  Be sure to get there early as the program starts at 7 p.m. sharp! 🙂

Right, now onto the big news… we have a HUGE announcement to make:

Route 66 is moving BACK to WEDNESDAYS!

As many of you know, in recent weeks the Turk’s Head have repeatedly moved us to the basement as a result of other events (mostly table quizzes) they have booked in (and which make them vastly more money than a dance night ever could).

Those of you who have experienced the upstairs space know how nice it is and how brilliant the floor is for dancing. Those of you who have been in the basement space know how small it is and unsuited to what we are hoping to achieve (including having 2 separate dance spaces). Changing Route 66 back to Wednesdays will help us to ensure we won’t be competing for the venue with other events (since Thursday is a popular night for other types of events, including… table quizzes!), and therefore won’t have to be moved downstairs.

We considered trying to find a new venue instead, but ultimately concluded that in all probability, no matter where we went we’d either have a similar problem to the Turk’s Head (i.e. being shifted if someone wants to book in a more profitable event) or else problems similar to Q Bar (either a less attractive location/space, or else needing to finish earlier –perhaps around 10:30 — so they could have their own regular night club).

As well, there seems to be a general feeling amongst people that — since Thursday *is* a popular night for doing other types of things — it perhaps isn’t best suited for a social dance night.

Unfortunately, I realise, this means we will now be operating on the same night as Jessica’s social dancing after her classes in the Garda Club (the Rug Cutters Club). However, I feel confident there is room for both events on Wednesdays, as they are very different events with different objectives — Jessica’s class on Wednesday, for example, is a course of 4 weeks, whereas our Route 66 lesson is drop-in, aimed at the casual learner, who just wants to give it a try. And, of course, the social dance portions of both events have their own unique vibes.

For now, the move means that we won’t be doing Balboa in the downstairs room until at least the end of June/early July, out of deference to the Rug Cutters Club, which will have someone in teaching Bal for the month of June.  I’ll encourage our regular guest DJs to mix in some Blues toward the later part of the night, though, so people can still get their fix of that!

We sincerely believe there’s plenty of room for people to support both events, and we hope you’ll agree.

All the best,
Jamie and Clare

New Route 66 Night in Turks Head

Hello, Swingtown!

As you all know by now, TOMORROW, Thursday, April 14th, is Route 66’s first night at the Turk’s Head.  So be sure to come out and help us celebrate!

Things to remember:
1. It’s a dress-up night!  So wear your best duds!  (Or not… we won’t turn you away if you don’t. 😉 )

2. All times will be as normal: Improvers at 7(ish) p.m., Beginners 8-8:45 p.m., social dancing until 11 (yes, it’s back to 11 again!  Or later if we refuse to leave! ;D )

3. We’ll (hopefully) be having a “Guest DJ” slot every week, with different people stepping in from 10 to 11 (or whenever) each week (don’t forget to let me know if you’re interested in signing up!).  Our super special guest star for the first night is Bobb, so come and check out his groovy tunes!

4. Speaking of DJ sets, my theme for this week will be Lionel Hampton.  There are 3 HUGE swing-era birthdays at the end of April, of which Lionel Hampton’s is the first on April 20, so I’ll be busting out all of his best tunes tomorrow night, including “Lavender Coffin”, “Flying Home”, and “Hey! Ba-Ba-Re-Bop”, among others;.  Swingin’!

5. Also on Thursdays at the Turk’s Head, there’s live Reggae music from around 10:20(ish) in the front bar, so after you finish dancing, you can hang out and dig that funky music!

And a couple of related notes:
6. Don’t forget as well to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for future announcements of special promotions (for example, passwords which will get you discounts), etc.  We now have a Facebook *group* set up, so if you’ve already signed up for the Facebook *page*, get back in and get on the *group* instead (apparently you can recommend groups to friends whereas you can’t do that with pages, so groups are handier in that way).  Sorry for any confusion!

7. Finally, our next 6-week Lindy course in Fairview begins next week, on Wednesday the 20th.  See the website or contact us for more info.

That’s everything!  Have a great day, and hope to see you livin’ it large at the Turk’s Head tomorrow! 😉

All the best,
Jamie and Clare

Lindy Hop class price reduction!

Great news!  We have worked out an agreement with the National Dance Academy (who run the studios we teach in) to lower the prices for all of our Lindy Hop classes!  All 6-week courses (Mondays in Temple Bar, Wednesdays in Fairview) will now cost €60, or €55 for students!  The changes take place starting with the next new session in each studio: April 4th in Temple Bar, April 20th in Fairview.  All part of our master plan for world domin- … er, I mean to bring you more affordable dancing! 🙂

See you when we swing you!
Jamie and Clare
